Maria Josè Arteaga Garavito is the Bocconi PhD student selected for a Baffi Centre scholarship on green finance. Since she is the student with the most promising project, she has been selected and offered a research contract within his/her PhD Year 5. The objective of the initiative is to foster the production of research by Bocconi PhD students on topics relevant for the Baffi centre.

Maria Josè Arteaga Garavito is a PhD candidate in Economics & Finance (Finance track) at Bocconi University. Her research studies the institutional rise of green banks in the United States and their role in shaping access to green finance. Green banks are publicly backed or non-profit financial institutions that mobilize private investment for climate-related projects. Arteaga Garavito builds a new project-level dataset documenting their activities in the U.S. and examine how these institutions influence the allocation of green capital across regions, sectors, and communities. The paper also introduces a model of nonprofit green lending that highlights how public and private capital interact through co-investment and leverage constraints, with implications for financial inclusion and environmental investment.

“I'm really thankful to the Baffi Centre for this fellowship. The support comes at an important time, as I enter the final year of my PhD, and it will help me continue developing both the data and modeling components of my research project. It also means a lot to connect my research on Green Banks and inclusive green finance with a community that values applied, policy-relevant work. I'm looking forward to the exchange of ideas and to contributing to ongoing research at the Centre", commented Maria Josè Arteaga Garavito.
