Banking, Finance and Regulation – BAFIR focuses on financial intermediation, financial stability, and regulation. The unit combines theoretical and empirical research, regularly publishing in top international journals. BAFIR members also regularly write policy papers that directly inform European debates on banking, the Banking Union, and the Capital Markets Union. The impact of BAFIR research extends to society by offering evidence-based insights on how regulation, climate risks, and new technologies affect the resilience of financial systems.

Fellows are frequent speakers at leading academic conferences and high-level policy roundtables worldwide, and they also co-organize flagship events such as the Bocconi-CEPR Finance Workshop on “Banking and Corporate Finance” and the Banca d’Italia-Bocconi-CEPR “Financial Stability and Regulation” Conference.

Research activities and publications include:

  • financial stability, regulation, and supervision;

  • monetary policy and central banks and their impact on credit markets;

  • impact of climate change on lending and financial markets;

  • effect of fintech and technological innovation on payment systems and credit markets;

  • the historical evolution of financial systems and central banks

 

Moreover, BAFIR researchers contribute to policy design through studies for the European Parliament and the European Commission, along with the participation in the Expert Panel on banking supervision for the European Parliament.
