CCR (Competiveness, Competition and Regulation)
Unit Director: Francesco Decarolis
The Competiveness, Competition and Regulation - CCR research unit aims to develop a center of excellence dedicated to the study of competition and economic regulation in strategic sectors. The unit also contributes to the debate on the challenges of European competitiveness, which highlights the role of market competition, economic regulation and industrial policy in the evolution of market dynamics. The goal is to provide analysis and tools to strengthen Italy’s and Europe's ability to compete on a global scale, while ensuring an effective regulatory framework consistent with the objectives of growth and sustainability.
The unit aspires to generate impact both in academic research and policy design. It acts as a hub connecting scholars, institutions and industry actors to co-produce knowledge and shape regulatory approaches in rapidly evolving sectors such as energy, digital markets, and public-private partnerships. It is supported through a mix of competitive research funding, philanthropic support, and institutional collaborations. Research projects include, for example, the redesign of electricity market architecture for the integration of renewables, the economic effects of the Digital Markets Act on platform ecosystems, or the analysis of contractual innovation in large-scale PPP (Public Private Partnership) infrastructure projects.
